Sandy, Three Months Later

Caramia's Collection was heavily impacted by the super storm known as "Sandy".  Located in the Rockaways in New York, we are in one of the hardest hit areas.  There were people who suffered more and people who suffered less, there is no way to truly gauge the havoc the storm created for each individual unless you've lived it.  The loss of memories, material things and the emotional impact is monumental.
As a business, we lost a lot of inventory and thought Caramia's Collection was surely finished due to the lack of power, internet and no postal service to name just a few of the obstacles we faced in the immediate aftermath of the storm.  What happened a few days after Sandy hit was my miracle.  I was able to to get a call through to someone I have treasured as a mentor and friend for several years.  I asked her to close down my business as I had no access to it.  Instead, she put her thinking cap on and came up with an idea.
First let me tell you, this friend is a fellow eBayer, PowersellingMom aka Danna Crawford.  In my moment of uncertainty and panic, not just how I would handle my business but also how to attempt to recover from the devastation I faced, Danna kept her cool and asked if there was any way I could put a package together and ship it to her and I said, yes, one package would be manageable. She told me she would "text" me my sales, write to my buyers about the shipping delay due to Sandy and basically run my business from her home base in Florida!  What a turn of events, a Floridian used to hurricanes running the business of a die hard New Yorker who had just experienced the most horrific of storms.
Danna texted my first list to me.  Without electricity and heat, I took advantage of the daylight and my trusty flashlight and looked for the items sold, packaged them up individually and then put together one large box.  I was able to have the package shipped to Danna, who then printed postage from my account and shipped my items from Florida.  Does this require faith and trust?  It sure did, but I had no doubt that the person I was trusting my business with could and would handle this as if it were her own.
We had our own version of a long distance assembly line and used the system twice with no problems.  This is what true friendship and teamwork is all about.
I am forever grateful to Danna Crawford for her help in keeping my eBay business going during this crazy time in my life.  I am grateful also to the buyers who were so kind and understanding, some even writing me follow up emails wishing me and my family well.  I am also so grateful for all the well wishes I have received from the eBay community and friends I have made on FaceBook.  I may not have thanked everyone individually but I want everyone to know that I am so appreciative of the outpouring of warmth.
Caramia's Collection did get internet back after several weeks and we're trying to get the business back up to speed.  We still do not have a local post office and are unsure of when it will be back up and running.  Sadly, one of our local mail carriers passed away in the storm.  His smile and friendly attitude when I would stop him on my way to the post office with packages to "save me a trip to the post office" will never be forgotten.
Three months after the storm, I want to say a great big thank you to Danna, you stepped up to the plate and hit a home run for me. I hope no one ever has to experience what my family and I and all the others in our area have gone through and are continuing to face on a daily basis.  I do hope that if a time of need does arise, that you have a friend who will "have your back" like I do.

The New Look of eBay

Earlier this year, Caramia's Collection went through some "growing pains".  We started our store, not thinking far into the future and picked an avatar/logo that after a while was not what we thought represented us.  So, after much consideration, we decided to dive into the re-branding pool and came up with our new look and haven't looked back since.
Apparently, we were not the only ones thinking of a new look. Today, eBay announced its new logo, not that far off from the original but more streamlined and in my opinion, more pleasing to the eye.
Here it is, what do you think?

Celebrate EARTH DAY 2012

A fabulous way to celebrate Earth Day can be by staying green and shopping for eco-friendly and pre-owned, gently used items on line.
At our eBay store, CaramiasCollection.com, we have a wonderful selection of reusable totes and gently used clothing, accessories, household items and books -- hope you will stop by.  Someone's cast-off may be the treasure you've been hunting for.  We've also just launched a 10% off sale on some of our merchandise.  Caramia's Collection has recently opened a store at Addoway.com under the same name -- hope to see you at one of our locations.  Have a wonderful, green Earth Day!

Dr. Nancy Snyderman Knocks eBay Commercials

My background noise in the mornings usually includes the Today Show.  Today's episode featured a panel of three including Dr. Nancy Snyderman and they were asked "what bugs you the most about the holidays?".  Dr. Snyderman, a prominent doctor, replied "I can't stand the eBay commercials, they are so over-the-top and offensive."!  Well, Dr. Snyderman, I am offended by your silly comment!  There are many people who make their living on eBay and in this awful economy, there are many people who turn to eBay to earn an extra few dollars to make ends meet.  We are not all doctors and/or professionals and quite frankly, your comment was snide and uncalled for.  EBay's commercials may or may not be top of the line, but eBay has made an effort to drive business to its site in these horrific economic times.  What good can come of a comment like yours?  Maybe you should read the newspapers.  There were quite a few disturbing Black Friday stories that certainly warranted being spoken about, certainly more disturbing than an eBay commercial!

Caramia's Collection: Love A Happy Buyer!

Finding treasures and listing them on eBay is a never ending adventure.  I always wonder what leads someone to my items and how they react when they receive their package.  A buyer recently took the time to write and ask me more questions about an item and ultimately told me why she was making her purchase.  Just received this email and have posted a photo of the item.  Many thanks to my buyer for my "smile of the day"!

"Hello ~

A quick note to let you know I rec'd my Kusnadi jacket/blouse today...love it! Thanks so much for an excellent transaction.

best wishes,,,,,,,"

Virtual Online Learning and Me

If you are an online seller or thinking of dabbling in it, I recommend looking into Virtual Online Learning.com aka VOL.  VOL was started by Danna Crawford who is also known as PowerSellingMom in the eBay world.  Danna started like many of us do, dabbling and trying to earn some extra money and has turned eBay into her career.  She not only sells on eBay, but is a certified eBay instructor and has developed Virtual Online Learning as a place for all online sellers to go to chat, gather and share information.  As an eBay seller, I have learned so much as a member of VOL and also made many internet friends who share the same goal, to make it as our own boss.

Inspirational Quote Of The Day

I've had a particularly trying week dealing with a few of my eBay buyers and I just want to get it out there that there really is truth to "catching more flies with honey than vinegar".  Why not start on a positive note,  that just about any issue that might arise can be worked out?  EBay is a great place, but we are not running the world and seriously, how seriously can you take certain situations that happen on eBay with respect to the rest of the world?

My quote this week is for all but really directed to those who choose to be negative when there is truly no reason for it.  Hope you all have a great day!

"Happy thoughts attract happy people into your life."

KATE MIDDLETON JELLY BEAN

A yellow jelly bean speckled in the faint shape ofthe face of the future princess of England, Kate Middleton,  has been making rounds on the internet with split screen photos comparing the two: long flowing hair, a faint grin and other discernable facial features are stippled in a pattern of red dots.  This jelly bean is expected to be put up for auction on eBay!  What do you think, is the world getting a little too carried away with the royal wedding?

SELLING On EBAY

I started selling on eBay years ago and ultimately opened my eBay store Caramia's Collection.  One of the fun parts I find in selling is when a buyer contacts me after a purchase to tell me how happy they are with their new treasure.

Here's a recent email I received from a buyer and a photo of the item she purchased, a vintage table lighter ala Mad Men:

"Got the piece today. It is FAB! Bigger than I expected, lovlier than I had hoped. Setting it on my antique smoking table with the tobacco box. "

The WONDERS Of FACEBOOK

A couple of days ago, I received a "FaceBook" message asking me if I was "....." from "....."!  Sure enough I am and responded to the message.  I am now in contact with people I haven't been in touch with for more than half my life.  And the funny thing is, the emails we have been sharing are as if we have been in touch for all this time.  It amazes me how people come in and out of our lives and even more so now thanks to the wonders of the internet.

So today, I would like to say thank you to FaceBook.  Not only are you a part of my eBay business world, you have reuinited me with my childhood and put a huge smile on my face!  Do you have a special FaceBook story -- please share it?

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

Cararmia's Collection would like to wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick's Day!  Did you know that St. Patrick was actually born in Wales, a little trivia to celebrate the day?!

To celebrate the day, I have also put just about everything in my eBay store on sale for at least one day -- some longer, so hope you will stop by.

CARA MIA by Jay Black and the Americans

My eBay store, Caramia's Collection was named after my all time favorite oldies song Cara Mia, performed by "The Voice", Jay Black of the original Jay and the Americans.  Please enjoy the song.

Caramia's Collection Salutes Cara Mia

The story of my eBay store name began with this song.  It is as special to me today as it was when I first heard it in the early '60's.  The song was and still is performed to perfection by Jay Black formerly of Jay and the Americans.  Jay Black's voice at 72 is as powerful today as it was when he first recorded this song -- no one can sing Cara Mia the way Jay Black does!

When In Doubt Wear Red

I love reading quotes by famous fashion designers.  Here's one from the iconic Bill Blass.
"When in doubt, wear red."
I just listed this adorable Forever 21 red dress in my eBay store.
