Flight 587, My Memories

Today is the 10th anniversary of the second deadliest U.S. aviation disaster, the crash of Flight 587 in Belle Harbor, NY.
I will never forget that day, just two months after 9/11, I heard a horrible noise, my house shook and the electricity went out.  My mind raced wondering what had happened -- could a power cable have exploded?  A few minutes later, my father called me from Florida, he had seen on the local news that a plane crashed a short distance from my home!  Not really comprehending the magnitude of what he was saying, I got in my car with my daughter to check on her friend who lived closer to the crash site and we could not get near it.  I turned on the radio thinking I would hear that a propeller plane had gone down, only to learn that it was an American Airlines Airbus.  My daughter and I parked the car and walked to the scene in this very small close knit community we live in.  For hours, we did not know the fate of her friend or his family, we only knew that everyone on the plane had perished and that more than likely so did people on the ground.  We watched the scene in total disbelief -- it looked like a scene from a disaster movie, this could not be happening!
But it was happening, five people on the ground died as well.  My daughter's friend and his family were safe.  Every year since, there is a ceremony here to remember the victims.  A permanent memorial has been erected and homes that were destroyed have been rebuilt.
I will never forget that day and send my deepest condolences out to the surviving family members and friends of those who were lost on this tragic day.

RIP Jack

It is time for airlines to revamp their rules for how baggage is handled.  The airline industry has not only being ripping off their customers by demanding ridiculous fees for "real" luggage but the way that traveling pets are treated is disgraceful.  The recent disaster created by American Airlines in the treatment of Jack the Cat should be a huge wake up call to the industry!  Animals are living beings, they are not baggage!  If an airline cannot provide a safe travel environment for a pet, they should stop thinking about the mighty dollar and honestly tell a potential passenger the truth.  Traveling with a pet that gets put in cargo is inhumane!  Rest in peace Jack and may no other animal experience the horror of what you endured in the last two months of your life.

I am very happy to be able to help spread the happy news that Jack the Cat who "went missing" at the Amerrican Airlines terminal at New York's JFK Airport has been found!  Jack is not in the best of health as a result of his ordeal but is under the care of a veterinarian and will soon be reunited with his owner.
This story is a perfect example of the power of the internet and the goodwill of people!

JACK The CAT MISSING AT JFK AIRPORT UPDATE

This story has touched my heart for many reasons.  I am an animal lover and traveled by air with my pets many years ago as I have previously written.  I would never consider doing it again unless absolutely necessary as was the case here.  Jack the Cat somehow got out of is carrier as he was waiting to be boarded on an American Airlines flight at Kennedy Airport heading to his new home across the country with his owner.  I have been following the story since it first broke and have been re-posting updates hoping to keep the story alive.

Update on Jack the Cat as of this morning, 9/30/11:

"‎35 days. 15,000 people. 1 lost cat. Thousands of hours, millions of footsteps used to search. Immeasurable gratitude to all who have taken the time to care. Maybe today is the day..."

JACK The CAT MISSING AT JFK AIRPORT UPDATE

Jack DESPERATELY NEEDs people to fan out through the unrestricted areas of the JFK airport property and surrounding areas/neighborhoods to notify EVERYONE they see that he is lost. This can be done by anyone that is available at anytime, day or night since there are different shifts that come in and out of the airport all day and all night, 7 days a week.   Jack’s post cards are available at the Bobbi & The Strays Vetport facility – Bldg. 189 Cargo area C at JFK.

JACK The CAT MISSING AT JFK AIRPORT UPDATE

Great news for those following the story of Jack the Cat.  Word on Jack's FaceBook page is that Jack was spotted by a Kennedy Airport employee and volunteers are busy searching.  If you live in the vicinity of Kennedy Airport or planning a trip, please keep your eyes open.  Jack somehow got out of his carrier while waiting in the baggage area to board an American Airlines flight.  We can only hope that he is reunited with his owner and in these crazy times, we have a happy ending.

JACK The CAT MISSING AT JFK AIRPORT UPDATE

Sadly, as of today September 3rd, Jack The Cat is still missing -- last seen in his crate at the American Airlines baggage area at JFK Airport.  American Airlines remains under fire from animal lovers as animal activists and concerned animal lovers continue to search for Jack, who was lost shortly before he was to board a flight from New York City to San Francisco on August 25 with his owner.

JACK The CAT MISSING AT JFK AIRPORT

I read this story in today's newspaper and felt it needed to be shared.  Let's hope with the wide exposure available through the internet Jack will be reunited with his owner!

" After several years in New York City, Jack The Cat was bound for a new life in California with his brother Barry.  That is, until his adventure took a wild turn which has sparked a social network lashing against American Airlines.  On Thursday, Jack and Barry were kenneled and passed over to baggage handlers on Flight 177 from Kennedy Airport.  After clearing security,  their owner, who was moving out west after 22 years in the Big Apple to start a new job, received a call from an airline employee who told her Jack was lost in the inbound baggage claim area.  Eventually their owner boarded a later flight with Barry after an hour-long search came up empty.  She was assured that she’d get a phone call as soon as Jack was found."

PLEASE HELP FIND JACK!!
