FLEET WEEK BEGINS

Another May and New Yorkers  and visitors to our great city get to experience FLEET WEEK which began today.  Fleet Week is a celebration of Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard teams who protect our shores.  New Yorkers get to meet and greet the service men and women and New York City becomes a sea of people in uniform.  If you are lucky enough to be in New York during Fleet Week, take a moment to say "thank you" if you see a one of these special people!

Rest In Peace Davy Jones

It was with great sadness I learned of the sudden death of one of my childhood favorites, Davy Jones at age 66.
Davy opened a boutique in New York City's Greenwich Village at the height of his stardom and I remember as a kid going there as often as I could, hoping to catch a glimpse of the star.
Davy was not only cute with his boyish good looks and charming English accent back in the '60's, but was talented as well.  Davy was a child actor in his native England and starred as "The Artful Dodger" in the play "Oliver".  We all know that he later became part of the singing group The Monkees and the rest is history.I had the great pleasure of seeing Davy Jones perfom with two of the other Monkees, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz several times.  It was a blast from the past that I will never forget.
Rest in peace Davy Jones and thank you for the memories.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS Recipe

I saw this recipe being prepared by the chef of  New York City restaurant -- it looks great, can't wait to try it for Thanksgiving.

Brussels Sprouts

Ingredients:
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 pounds Brussels sprouts-ends trimmed, cut in half lengthwise
¼ cup minced onion
4 cloves garlic-peeled and chopped
1 cup chicken or vegetable stock
2 tablespoons butter

Directions:
Cook the Brussels sprouts in 2 batches. Heat a large skillet or dutch oven on high heat. Add 3 tablespoons of the oil, when just about to smoke, add half of the Brussels sprouts, stir to coat and brown the sprouts, about 5 minutes. Remove from pan, into a shallow bowl, sprinkle with salt and repeat with 3 more tablespoons of the oil, this time over medium-high heat.
When then sprouts are cooked, return the pan to high heat, add remaining oil and when hot, add the garlic and onion. Cook to brown, about 1-2 minutes. Add sprouts, stock and a pinch of salt, and over high heat cook for 3 minutes.
Then add the butter and cook until the butter had melted and the stock has become somewhat glazed. Adjust seasoning with salt
