Remembering Davy Jones

When something monumental occurs on February 29th also known as Leap Year, does that mean it really didn't happen? Does it mean that the event is commemorated or remembered on the day before or the day after that fateful day?
On February 29, 2012, a part of my childhood was taken away as we lost Davy Jones of the Monkees suddenly to a heart attack. Honestly, I can't believe a year has gone by even though my life was also dramatically changed by what is now called "Super Storm" Sandy.  The year since last February 29th and the months since Sandy seem to have flown by, one day blending into the next.  What was once "normal" in many ways no longer is.
It was last year on a Wednesday at about 1:50 pm that I had my car radio on and heard Monkees songs rather than Beatles songs on what is usually "Beatles Wednesday".  My mind raced for a moment and then the DJ said the words that I will never forget, that Davy had passed away.
I had the pleasure of experiencing the talent of Davy in concert. He was a special man whose life will live on in the music he left, his daughters and the fund that was created in his memory to care for his beloved horses.  He was a man who loved to make people happy, it was so evident watching him perform, it was in his blood. Not a day has gone by that I haven't wished there was a rewind button for life -- this was a huge loss for the many who loved him, for his beloved family and pets.
So today March 1st, because there is no February 29th, I remember Davy Jones and all he stood for and contributed to our world.  He will never be forgotten.

In Memory of Davy Jones

Six months ago today, on the crazy day that happens once every four years, February 29th, I lost a part of my childhood as I heard on the radio that my little girl heart throb, Davy Jones of The Monkees had suddenly passed away of a heart attack.
I grew up madly "in love" with Davy along with millions of other girls and followed his career as I grew into an adult, most recently seeing him with fellow band mates, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork last summer on Long Island.  When I left the theatre, I thought, wow, they still have it, see you guys next time, never thinking there would not be a next time.
February 29th was a Wednesday, the same as today, August 29th is -- I have a Wednesday routine, was in my car when the news came over the radio and every Wednesday since February 29th has been a heartbreak, I guess that's what happens when things become routine.
In honor of Davy's memory and his incredible love of his horses, his four daughters have created The Davy Jones Equine Memorial Fund.  Davy is smiling down knowing that his daughters have been doing all they can to keep his legacy alive, relocating his precious herd so that they can oversee their care.
So, in Davy's memory and for all of us who have and still love him and The Monkees, please stop by the FaceBook page his girls have set up, give it a "like" and if you can, give a donation to help them take care of their dad's beloved horses.
Rest in peace Davy, you are so missed but will never be forgotten.

Pleasant Valley Sunday

Wishing everyone a beautiful day and remembering Davy Jones with "Pleasant Valley Sunday".  This is a great song from "back in the day" and watching the video brings back memories of the fashions, many of which are once again popular now.

Does Life Need Drama to Sell?

I made no secret of my heartbreak when I learned that of one of my childhood heartthrobs, Davy Jones, passed away a month ago today.
What has taken me by surprise is that there has been so little coverage in the media.  Davy and The Monkees made a huge contribution to music in the '60's and they all managed to stay friends and continue to keep their music alive all these years later.  We didn't hear of "dirt" in Davy's private life, no drug or alcohol abuse -- basically no major drama.  So, is that why fans like me have really been so disappointed that Davy's untimely and natural passing made only one magazine cover?  I think so and it is a huge commentary on the state of our society and what sells magazines and air time.
I for one am so thankful for having grown up in the innocence of the '60's where the passing of someone so special to so many would have been monumental news.
Davy genuinely loved what he did, loved music, loved his fans, loved his family and adored animals -- why no recognition for his wonderful life?
Again, rest in peace Davy Jones, you will never be forgotten.

Rest In Peace Davy Jones

It was with great sadness I learned of the sudden death of one of my childhood favorites, Davy Jones at age 66.
Davy opened a boutique in New York City's Greenwich Village at the height of his stardom and I remember as a kid going there as often as I could, hoping to catch a glimpse of the star.
Davy was not only cute with his boyish good looks and charming English accent back in the '60's, but was talented as well.  Davy was a child actor in his native England and starred as "The Artful Dodger" in the play "Oliver".  We all know that he later became part of the singing group The Monkees and the rest is history.I had the great pleasure of seeing Davy Jones perfom with two of the other Monkees, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz several times.  It was a blast from the past that I will never forget.
Rest in peace Davy Jones and thank you for the memories.

More MONKESS............"I Wanna Be Free"

A song I absolutely loved ages ago and heard performed last night is "I Wanna Be Free".  Davy commented how he always got the girl on the show and how they showed them both with "stars in their eyes" -- times then were so different and innocent.  Hope you enjoy this, I'm still smiling from hearing it in person.

Celebrate Saturday with SATURDAY'S CHILD

Caramia's Collection had amazing seats at The Monkess 45th anniversary reunion tour last night.  What a wild trip back into the '60's with great music and an ongoing video show of highlights of the history of The Monkees, their music, TV show and their lives.  It was great to see that Davy Jones is still adorable and agile enough to do his dances that made girls swoon back in the day.  Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork were fabulous as their great comical talented selves.  After all these years, the three really know how to work off each other and put on a great show.
